Father, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.

Who among us doesn’t know the temptations of Jesus. We are all familiar with them and its interpretations. Yet, how often we forget its significance! The King of Kings became man to show us how to carry ourselves through every situation a man can pass.

Matthew 4 :1-11 is a biblical account for the temptations of Jesus. It can precisely be related to the different stages of a man’s life. After baptism, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to the desert, where He fasted and was then tempted. The first of the temptations was to turn stone into bread. Jesus said, ‘ Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’. This refers to the physical growth of man. We can relate this to the growth of a baby. We often feed our children with the best foods for their physical and mental growth. But it is necessary that we fill them with the word of God at their early years, that they may grow in wisdom and stature as Jesus did. Sealing the word of God in their hearts at a tender age will ensure that they do not depart from the righteous walk later.

The second temptation of Jesus where He replied that we should not test the Lord our God symbolizes the phase of our youth. In John’s epistle, he regards this as the pride of life. In our youth, we are burning in the richness of our strength. We seek adventure and often pleasure, sometimes travelling dangerous paths forgetting that it is a test unto our body which is the temple of God. Hence the reminder, ‘Thou shall not test the Lord your God’.

Finally, the Kingdoms of the world! Oh, what a sight! From our youth it is a race to satisfy the lust of our eyes. The irony being, most often we do not realize what we are running behind. The snare of the devil is as silent as the crawl of the snake. Our eyes often deceive the mind to believe the worldly Kingdoms as bare human needs and in that quest we often forget the works for our Lord’s Kingdom. And the Lord says, ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve only Him’, because surely we cannot serve two masters.

The choice is yours! Have you chosen your master? Are you willing to follow His call? Raise up your children in the ways of the Lord and bring glory unto His Name!!
